It is Cinco de Mayo and a hot Atchison Topeka & Santa Fe Railway intermodal train is heading west across the Mojave Desert. A quartet if EMD SD45s (in two versions) lead this train: ATSF SD45 5327 (ex-ATSF 5516; née-ATSF 1816), SD45-2 5829, SD45 5352 and SD45-2 5859. And, as common in the late 1980s, some of this power wears the red, yellow and black paint scheme of the proposed Southern Pacific Santa Fe Railway, which was never approved by the Federal Railroad Administration. Not too far behind this train is Union Pacific 4-8-4 steam locomotive 8444 with a passenger train headed to Los Angeles for Union Station’s 50th birthday.
