A crew member on a westbound Union Pacific loaded coal train stands ready to inspect the upcoming eastbound Amtrak train it is meeting at Cajon, in the heart of southern California's Cajon Pass.
The coal train is powered up front by UP SD40-2s 3282, 3344 and 3143, along with SD45 19, with two more units, UP SD40-2 3761 and SD45 45, near the rear of the train.
Heading east is Amtrak F40PHs 224 and 233 leading train 36, the eastbound Desert Wind. (Coincidently, this same locomotive, 224, was the leader on the very first train 36 roughly a year earlier, on October 28, 1979.) This train is heading from Los Angeles to Ogden, Utah.
